Candelaria

Candelaria is located at the heart of the rainforest and is crossed by the region’s largest river, which it owes its name to. It is one of the most promising destinations for ecotourism in all the state. Less than 20 years old, it preserves the simplicity and kindness of old-fashioned people to travelers.

If you want a complete experience, let the river be your guide. Navigate its lower part with calm waters. Between Candelaria and Boca de Pargo is ideal for a photo safari accompanied by birds, lizards, turtles, manatees. Or perhaps you might enjoy other activities such as kayaking, water skiing and fishing. If you enjoy taking risks and going on adventures, you can’t not miss the Salto Grande municipal park with cascades of up to 6 meters. It is perfect for rafting.

Other interesting places to visit include the springs of Pedro Baranda, a 200 hectares wetland surrounded by lush vegetation and the Laguna Misteriosa, a lagoon full of islets. Locals say that its main island is slowly moving in the direction the wind.

Candelaria is also an important site for the Mayan culture. You can visit the ruins of El Tigre, one of the most powerful Mayan capitals. El Tigre, also known as Itzamkanak, was the seat of Mayan chiefdom in Acalán.
