The Land Gate is a military construction that was designed to defend access by land to the city from any angle. The wall is surrounded by a moat and has embrasures from which weapons were fired.
It has adjoining rooms which were occupied by the chief of the watch and the troops on duty. Atop the gate is a defensive system that could be used to attack any enemy that managed to gain access.
The Land Gate offers a light and sound show called “El lugar del sol” (The place of the sun), which is presented on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 8 p.m. and lasts around 60 minutes. Spectators are transported back to the colonial era in which the Campeche people fought and ferociously defended themselves from pirate attacks.
Monday to Sunday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. “The Place of the Sun” light and sound show; Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 8 p.m.
