Palizada Magic Town

Palizada, which is near the border with Tabasco, is reached by road from Escarcega, taking the detour to Jonuta, or from Ciudad del Carmen in a 2 hour boat ride which we recommend, crossing over the Laguna de Términos and up the river. The town retains its magic in its buildings, streets, people and cultural traditions, which is why it was given the title of Pueblo Mágico (magic town) in 2011.

Palizada owes its name to the logwood in the area. Up until the early 20th century, it was a very important source for producing the red dye used for coloring clothes and all kinds of fabrics.

Walk along its picturesque old town, which boasts the splendor of the trade era, with houses made of brick and French-style tiled roofs and its unique parks. Among them is the Parque de la Madre (mother's park) with a statue of a mother with six fingers; there is also Liberty Park with its replica of the Statue of Liberty in New York and the main park dedicated to Benito Juarez. However the most important monument is the Church of San Joaquin, in honor of the patron of the city, which is over 200 years old.
