For all local and long distance calls, you need to buy a phone card available at convenience stores, newsstands, hotels, travel agencies, airports, among others. Generally, public and private offices are open Monday through Friday from 9:00 to 19:00. Some close between 13:00 and 15:00 for lunch. Malls are open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 to 20:00 hours and only a few shops are open at noon on Sunday. Bank branches work Monday through Friday from 9:00 to 16:00 hours, some also open on Saturdays from 9:00 to 14:00.
The official currency is the Mexican peso. Notes are in the following denominations: 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 pesos, and coins: 10, 20 and 50, cents come in 1, 2, 5 and 10 peso coins. The U.S. dollar is accepted at all money exchange offices and some also accept the Canadian dollar and the euro. The main tourist establishments accept U.S. dollars as payment. Use of the euro is not as common, but some businesses also take it. Keep in mind that rural areas and towns only accept Mexican pesos.
Credit cards and cash
The most widely accepted credit cards are: Visa, American Express and Master Card. For excursions outside the cities, you should carry cash in small bills. There are ATMs in all major bank branches and most of them work for credit and debit cards issued in the U.S. operating on the Cirrus or Plus system. ATMs only dispense pesos.
The VAT (Value Added Tax) is 16% of the value of any product and / or service.
It is advisable to carry traveler's checks issued by internationally known entities that can be changed smoothly in bank branches in addition to being accepted in hotels, travel agencies and various institutions. You must take into account that most places charge a nominal fee.
The measurement systems used are Metric for distances, Celsius for temperature and Volts for electrical voltage (which is 110V to 60Hz).
