Campeche is a state with a large natural wealth which is used for its tourist development. According to the characteristics of the physical environment such as its relief, climate, wildlife, etc. it is divided in four large natural regions, such as the coast, the mountain, the rivers and the jungle.
The state has six protected, natural areas: Calakmul, Laguna de Terminos, Ria Celestun, Los Petenes, Balam Kin and Balam Ku. The first four have a status of federal protection, and the last two of state jurisdiction. The total protected area represents the 39.7% of the State.
Calakmul represents the largest tropical reserve in Mexico. It has an area of 1,800,000 acres. Its dense vegetation includes “guayacan”, mahogany and “palo de tinte”. Also, this is the habitat for felines like the jaguar, the puma, the ocelot, the shrieking monkey and the small tiger. It has around 300 species of birds and some orchids which thrive only in the Yucatan peninsula.
In the Laguna de Terminos there are a great variety of birds, in the swamps there are crocodiles, “pejelagarto” and different kinds of crayfish. This reserve has been considered as a sanctuary for the dolphin, the “carey” turtle and the manatee.
Another important natural resource is the rivers region, mainly the Candelaria and Palizada, where kayak tours take place.
Campeche has a vast coast of 210 miles, where water sports can be practiced, such as fishing and archaeological diving.
There are other tourist activities to perform like: jogging, cycling, horse riding, bird watching, photo hunting and camping.
