The natural reserve of the “Petenes” is known as the sanctuary of fish called the sábalo, or baby tarpons, which are found year-round thanks to the existing conditions (climate, vegetation, and depth of water). The sábalo weigh between 20 and 28 pounds and do not migrate until they reach adult age.

The season with the best conditions for fishing is between the months of March and September, though sport fishing can be done throughout the entire year. Campeche, as it is one of the three states in the Yucatan peninsula, has a tropical climate and is hot most of the year, making it is an ideal destination for fly fishermen.

It is very important that fishermen bring their own equipment, whether it is spinning or flyfishing (for example: a fishing rod between 7-8 wt or 9, and bait: purple, purple/white, purple/black, orange/white, yellow/red, orange, or yellow). The boats used to practice this activity are known as "lanchas", and measure between 18 and 23 feet, the same as those ideal for this type of depth; the most exciting part of sábalo fishing is that the fish are quite difficult to capture; as a species they fight and jump constantly trying to free themselves of the hook. The ability to capture them depends on the skill of the fisherman.
It is important to consider contracting a local company or operator, which will guarantee a safe and high-quality service. Some fisherman guides specialize in sports fishing, and all have great knowledge of the area.
