
A Municipality located in the south of the state home of the El Tigre archaeological zone, an ancient Maya ceremonial center. Some experts claim that it was in this site where Hernán Cortés sacrificed Cuauhtemoc, the
last aztec emperor, and so digs are taking place in the site in order to find his last remains. Very close by, one can find other archaeological zones such as the Cerro de los Muertos (Hill of the Dead) and Salto Grande (Big Jump), the resort of Coahulita and townships like Mujica and Pacaytún, located in the banks of the Candaleria river. Because of its natural treasures and landscape, ecotourism has been easily developed in this area.
From Campeche take the highway heading towards Champoton and drive 60 km, cross the city through the malecon (boardwalk) you will find the intersection marked Escarcega.
Champoton is located on the river Champoton, you can find many good affordable seafood restaurants.
About 90 km further you will reach Escarcega where you will find a Tourist information bureau, shops, handcrafts, and lavatories.
Roughly 4 km further you will find the investigation center of “El Tormento” where you can find the species of flora of the region it is great place to have contact with nature. In this place there is a new project of transform it into an eco touristic park, with hotel and restaurant services.
Further on 27 km from there you can find the settlement of march 18, place known for its delicious cheese (queso de hebra), 34 km after you reach the intersection head to your left heading to Candelaria, travel 25 km and you will reach the destination.
