Located at the south east part of the state known as “The house of the serpents mouth” due to its elegance and decorative richness it is thought that Chicanná was a place for the “privileged”. Due to its location during the Classic late and classic terminal periods (300-800 AC) it must have been part of the commercial route that crossed the Mexican gulf until reaching the southern coast.
The name “House of the serpents mouth” refers to the huge head figure at the central façade of structure II. According to archeologists, the head figure represents “Itzamna” reptile personification of their divinity.
This site is located in front of the Hotel Chiccana Village and it has a restaurant with typical gastronomy.
