The place gets its name from the dying bog wood called the “palo”, or stick, of Campeche, the “palo” from Brazil and the “palo” of tinte, which can be found in the area. It is also known as Palo de Campeche (Campeche stick), Palo de Brasil (Brazilian stick) or Palo de Tinte (Dye stick). First inhabitants were native nahuatl chontal Indians, that belonged to the territory ruled by the Cacique of Acalán Tixchel, one of the provinces of the pre-Hispanic Campeche. It´s name means “place of canoes”. The first Europeans arrived to the zone in the XVI century. Soon, the area became the main site for precious woods in the Yucatan peninsula; these were transported by the river to be shipped to Europe, just as in then called Villa del Carmen.
Nowadays, Palizada is a location that offers several attractions to tourists. It has three picturesque parks. In one of them, there is a New York Statue of Liberty replica, as well as the sculpture dedicated to the mother, which has six fingers in one hand.
