The state of Campeche is located to the southeast of the Mexican territory, within the area, wich makes up the Yucatán peninsula. Tabasco and the Gulf of Mexico, wich have 226 miles of coastline, border it to the west. The state of Quintana Roo and the Central American country of Belize are to the westm the state of Yucatan to the north an Tabasco and the Republic of Guatemala to the south.
Campeche has a surface area of 21,953 square miles, where nearly 650 thousand people live. It is divided into 11 municipalities: Calkini, Calakmul, Campeche, Candelaria, Champoton, El Carmen, Escarcega, Hecelchakan, Hopelchen, Palizada an Tenabo.

The Campechan economy is based on fishing, agriculture, cattle ranching, forest and energy resources, industry and tourism.
The current territory of Campeche formed part of the vast region where the Mayan civilization, one of the most important in Mesoamerica, settled and flourished in antiquity. Its legacy is not only present in the archeological zones, but also in sixteen ethnic groups of pure Mayan heritage in various communities, generally in the so-called Campechan South.
After the conquest of Mexico by the Spanish (16th century), indigenous peoples and Europeans mixed and created the mestizo (mixed) race, which currently predominates throughout the country. Campeche is no exception, and its cultural richness is determined by this fusion, which makes up the base of traditions, folklore, music, customs and gastronomy. All these things can without a doubt be considered unique in the world.
